Winter makes it easy to just head straight home and call it a night, right? Sun’s gone by 5pm, it’s cold, work’s done, the couch is right there. Totally fair.
But some of the best bits of living in Marrickville happen after you’ve logged off. And when you call this corner of the Inner West home, a night out doesn’t have to be a whole production either. Live music, theatre, comedy, trivia and the occasional life-drawing class are all a short wander from Wicks Place, which means a random Tuesday night can turn into something worth telling the office about tomorrow with almost no planning at all.
So next time the evening’s yours, dump the laptop on the kitchen bench, and head straight back out the door. Where to is all right below.
Curtain up: catch a show
The Factory Theatre is the big one, and it’s practically on your doorstep. Multiple spaces, a constant rotation of live gigs, comedy, theatre and club nights, and the kind of line-up where you can rock up on a whim and still land on a great night. Check what’s on, pick a space, go.
For something more intimate, Flight Path Theatre tucked inside the Addison Road Community Centre is indie theatre at its warmest. The program runs from plays and musicals to spoken word and movie screenings, usually powered by local performers (so you might just be the first to discover our next big homegrown talent!) and thanks to the small size, good views are guaranteed (you’re never more than a few rows from the stage).
Chase some live music
The Gasoline Pony cheerfully bills itself as Marrickville’s favourite live music bar, and it makes a solid case: bands five nights a week, a covered beer garden, plus drinks and dinner sorted without leaving your seat.
Camelot Lounge is the one for when you want your music with a bit of soul, jazz, world music, folk and everything adjacent, in a room that’s been championing left-of-centre acts for years. (More on their Wednesday life-drawing sessions further down.)
Fancy a swing first? The courts at the Marrickville Hardcourt Tennis Club stay open until 10pm most nights, so you can squeeze in a few games, then settle in for Friday night live music from 7pm and a proper Portuguese feed at Casa Do Benfica. Tennis, tunes and grilled goodness, in roughly that order.
Then there’s The Vic on the Park, which does the classic pub night beautifully: live music to end the week, plus a weekly trivia night for when you’d rather flex your fun-fact muscle over a schooner.
And, if your idea of a Friday is smooth sax and a martini in hand, Ester’s Jazz Nights are a local treasure, live sets every Friday from 6:30pm, $20 martinis all night, a $29.99 burger-and-martini combo, and a help-yourself fridge of cheese and charcuterie. Chef’s kiss.
Laughs, words and the odd curveball
We Three is the cosy small bar that punches well above its size. Kookaburra Comedy takes over a couple of Wednesdays a month, there’s a spoken-word open mic on the last Sunday, and rotating local art on the walls the rest of the time.
The Red Rattler is Marrickville’s gloriously unclassifiable art space, artist-run, community-owned, and home to drag, cabaret, dance parties, live music and storytelling nights you genuinely won’t find anywhere else.
Want to flex your own creative muscle? Camelart Club runs life drawing every Wednesday from 6:30pm at Camelot Lounge, with live music to set the mood, all levels welcome, just a $15 door (BYO pencils).
…and when it’s all a bit much
Some nights all of the above just is not on the cards. Been there, get that. On the evenings when the couch is calling louder than the calendar, everything you need is still right here at Wicks Place. Sushi Train, Zambrero, Chargrill Charlie’s and Harris Farm all stay open later, so dinner’s handled with barely a step out the door. This list will keep. Come back to it another night.
