There’s a particular moment, somewhere between logging off and stepping outside, where the evening can go either way.

Cook something. Pick something up. Meet someone for a quick drink that turns into dinner. Or just follow whatever feels right once you’re out the door.

At Wicks Place, everything’s close, nothing feels rushed, and there’s always a version of the night that fits your energy, whether that’s quick and easy, warm and comforting, or a little more social.

Here’s your cheat sheet to after-work plans that make the most of cooler nights, shorter days and a very well-fed neighbourhood.

5:00PM: The reset

The workday’s done. You’re on your way home. The question is: what kind of night is this?

If it’s a cook something, stay in kind of evening, Harris Farm Markets downstairs makes it easy to get ahead of yourself. Groceries, ready-made salads, something warm for now, something for tomorrow. One stop and you’re sorted for both dinner and the week ahead.

If it’s already feeling like a no-cooking-required situation, you’re equally covered.

A burrito or bowl from Zambrero is fast, fresh and hits that sweet spot between light and filling. Sushi Train is there for when you want something easy but still a little fun, hot bowls, ramen, udon, plus plates that keep things moving without overthinking it.

Or go straight to comfort: Chargrill Charlie’s hot bar, a rotisserie chicken still warm, creamy potato, gravy, something green on the side. The kind of dinner that feels like you’ve done the right thing without trying too hard.

6:30PM: Out, but not far

This is where the night can stretch a little.

A short wander and you’re at Marrickville Bowling Club, which does a bit of everything. A casual bite at the bistro, a quick game of barefoot bowls before it gets too dark, or settling in for whatever’s on, live music, trivia, a classic Friday night meat raffle. It’s low-key, local, and very easy to stay longer than planned.

If you’re chasing a drink with a bit more atmosphere, Philter Brewing is always a good call. Pints, small bites, open space. Or head to The Bob Hawke Beer & Leisure Centre for something a little more playful, beers, snacks, maybe a round of pool to round things out.

7:30PM: Lean into the night

By now, you’ve either settled in… or you’re just getting started.

For something with a bit more energy, The Factory Theatre is right there. Live gigs, theatre, comedy, the kind of place where you can decide on a whim and still walk into a good night.

Or keep it simple and lean into comfort again.

A steaming bowl of pho from VN Street Foods hits differently when the air cools down. It’s quick, warming, and exactly what you want when you didn’t realise how cold it had gotten.

8:30PM: The easy finish

This is the part of the night Marrickville does best.

Maybe you’re heading home with something in hand: takeaway, leftovers, or a second round of snacks you didn’t plan on. Maybe you’ve lingered somewhere longer than expected.

Either way, everything feels close, easy, and just enough.

Because that’s the thing about evenings around Wicks Place.

You don’t really need a plan, just a starting point, and a rough idea of how you want to feel.

The rest tends to sort itself out.
